Stump Grinding Questions, Answered

How much does stump grinding cost?
Every stump is different, so we price each job individually. The cost depends on the stump’s diameter at ground level, how many surface roots it has and how far they spread, and how easy it is to reach. There’s no minimum charge and no travel fee anywhere on the Big Island. Measure your stump (watch the video on our homepage), then call 808-TO-STUMP. Dan will ask a few quick questions and give you a free estimate over the phone.

How deep do you grind?
We grind stumps and exposed roots 6–10 inches below ground level. If you’re putting in pavers, concrete or a building, we can “core out” the stump deeper so the ground won’t sink later.

Will the stump grow back?
In most cases, no. Dan grinds the stump deep enough that it won’t resprout or regrow, with no chemicals needed.

What happens to the wood chips?
After grinding, there’s a pile of wood chips where the stump was. Most people scoop them out and use them as mulch, fill the hole with soil, and plant grass seed. For an extra fee, we can clean up, haul the chips away, and fill the hole for you.

Can you get into my backyard?
Probably. Our grinder fits through a standard 36-inch gate. If a riding lawn mower can reach the stump, we can too.

Do I need to be home?
No, you don’t need to be home. It’s nice if you are, so Dan can go over the job with you.

What about underground pipes and wires?
Underground utilities need to be clearly marked before we start. If you’re not sure where they are, we can help you locate them first.

Can you grind stumps in rocky or lava ground?
Yes. Dan grinds stumps in rocky and lava ground all over the island.

Do you remove bamboo, shrubs and small trees?
Yes. We grind out bamboo, stubborn shrubs and invasive plants like strawberry guava, and we remove and prune smaller trees. For large tree removals, we’re happy to recommend a local tree company.

Do you offer emergency stump removal?
Yes. If a storm or a construction project leaves you with a stump that has to go now, text “EMERGENCY” to 808-TO-STUMP and we’ll respond quickly.

Can you grind out surface roots?
Yes. Surface roots can be ground out too. When you measure your stump, also note how many roots are on the surface and how far they run before going underground. Dan will factor them into your estimate.

Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Hawaii Stump Removal is fully licensed and insured, and Dan is an ISA Certified Arborist.

What areas do you serve?
The entire Big Island, from Hilo and the Hamakua Coast to Kona, Waimea, Kohala, Puna and Kaʻu.

How do I get a quote?
Measure your stump at ground level across the widest point, then call 808-TO-STUMP (808-867-8867) for a free phone estimate.
